Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is now operational at Shoalhaven Anglican School. The award is a youth self-development program for all young people. The Award is non-competitive and encourages young people to set and achieve goals at a level appropriate to their needs. There are four sections that must be completed for a young person to qualify for an award: Community Service, Skills, Recreation and Expedition. These provide an opportunity for students to acquire and develop skills; initiative and self esteem which will help them become more confident members of the community.
The scheme is highly regarded by many employers and is a significant part of Shoalhaven Anglican School’s leadership development in the Senior School. It is hoped that most of the students in Year 9 will complete their Bronze Award and feel encouraged to move on to higher levels of the Award.
The Program
The Award has three levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold. To obtain an award, students must complete requirements in the following four sections:
- Service - any voluntary community service or project. This might include volunteer service at a hospital, aged care home, environmental care or the achievement of a first aid or life saving qualification.
- Expedition - undertake and complete training and a practice trip followed by a test expedition over two days.
- Skills - a cultural or social activity must be pursued leading to a deeper knowledge of the subject and the attainment of a reasonable degree of skill eg. playing a musical instrument, photography.
- Physical Recreation – involvement and improvement in overall performance and knowledge of one chosen activity. Activities may include physical activities such as football, cricket, netball, swimming, athletics.
