Middle School

In the Middle School at Shoalhaven Anglican School our focus is to assist our students to find their identity. This is a time of incredibly rapid change for adolescents both emotionally and physically. In response, we involve our students in tasks which help them find their place in this world. We allow them to take risks by being involved in activities which challenge our students physically, intellectually and spiritually. In so doing they will experience success and learn from their failures in a positive, Christian environment. We work hard to continue to develop the foundational skills in the curriculum’s Key Learning Areas.
The outcome of this is a group of young people who are able to define what they aspire to and are ready to strive for their destiny.

We need to give adolescents the message that they may sometimes fail, that they will face difficult tasks ahead, but that they can overcome difficulties with practice, with dedication, and sometimes with a parent's or teacher's help. We may have to remind ourselves that our rapidly growing children, who may be adept at disguising their self-doubt and dependency, continue to need our support to put forth the persistent efforts that will shape them into the adults they hope to become. (Apter T 2006)

Students need someone "who connects with them and asks, 'How can I help you get through the school day better?'" (Arth A 2004)

They strive for independence, yet they clamour to belong. They fight the connections they have with their parents, but they need to form alliances with peers and bond with understanding teachers. They are finding themselves and, in the process, will challenge authority, experiment with sarcasm, and try on many different personalities. They are adolescents. And, if recent brain studies are accurate, they can be as young as age 10 or as old as age 25. (Checkley K 2004)

Growth during this time is the 2nd fastest period of maturation in humans (Holt L 2004)
